Water Void is a local boathouse that sits on a natural narrow creek opening up to the Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, New York. The boathouse proposes a collective ritual of rowing in and out of a tunnel to reach the lake. As one rows deeper into the tunnel, it gradually gets narrower and darker, creating a dramatic yet serene experience for the rowers. Leaving the boathouse, the tunnel frames the views of the Cayuga Inlet and re-defines the notion and action of rowing. The shower rooms inside act as an end to the collective ritual as they become social spaces for collective interaction and engagement, while providing all levels of privacy.
