governors island

The promenade in Governors Island proposes a structure comprised of two lap pools, walking paths, and sitting areas. Inspired by the New York tradition of land reclamation, the promenade floats above water with access from the island, allowing visitors to experience the melancholic story of the island by creating vantage points to its abandoned and forgotten buildings like Castle Williams and the Navy Library. The swimmers are sheltered in frosted glass cubes with faded views, while smaller lap pools in three different promenades confront the user with the island, creating a more intimate experience. The island’s obscure qualities are protected by not building on land.
